it’s friday, may 1, & we have a full moon in libra, in the starspace called svātī, which also happens to be buddha purnima, the full moon that celebrates the birth, enlightenment & passing of the buddha. & jupiter is in the mix!
full moon shining in libra is reflecting the light of exalted sun in aries. this axis has us toggling like a seesaw between our individuality (aries) & mutuality (libra), inviting us to stand in our own power/energy without isolating ourselves from others, to co-create a better vision for our shared existence.
wise & high-minded jupiter aspects this full moon, creating a trifecta of sattvic (pure) energy (moon, sun & jupiter are the three sattvic planets)—may you feel those blessings!
svātī is ruled by vayu, god of the wind (including our inner winds, our prana, our vital life force), & is represented by a young plant bending in the wind, going with the flow of life, not trying to resist it or go in a different direction. how can you find stability regardless of the winds of change?
svātī’s superpower is to scatter like the wind—to scatter words & ideas, to scatter prayers. what are you sending out into the world? remember that thoughts become words become actions become destiny.
on this auspicious day, both sun & moon dwell in the portion (amsha) of the D20 (chart of spiritual progress) ruled by bagalamukhi devi, a fierce tantric goddess who yanked out the tongues of demons (ouch!), thus nullifying their negative talk. what does your self-chatter sound like? what thoughts/stories are constantly swirling in your head? who might you be without those stories, without the story of who you are?
buddha, aka gautama buddha, started life as siddartha buddha—just a plain-old ordinary prince like the rest of us, reminding us that we, too, are buddhas just waiting to be woken up. the buddha wandered in search of wisdom about the nature of suffering & how to live in a world full of it, then sat under the bodhi tree & meditated for forty-nine days before achieving enlightenment, which came only when he thought all was lost, it wasn’t gonna happen, & he surrendered.
inquiry is the seed of transformation: how do you embrace the spirit of inquiry, of self-inquiry, of getting still & doing the deep dive within (i.e., meditating)? can you fully surrender?
libra is associated with the heart chakra: how can you practice radical compassion—for yourself & others? how can you remain heart-centered while chaos & destruction swirl around you? how can you be like a tree in relationship, bending in the wind without breaking, without becoming a doormat, without abandoning yourself, standing stronger together than apart?
in braiding sweetgrass, robin wall kimmerer talks about how corn, beans & squash, known as the three sisters in indigenous agriculture, are a model of reciprocity & ecological wisdom—they are planted together & thrive together, interdependently, in cooperation: corn provides climbing support for beans, beans fix nitrogen to fertilize the soil, squash acts as a living mulch to retain moisture & suppress weeds.
we, too, thrive through cooperation rather than competition, by nurturing one another & our relationships, within families & communities.
“all flourishing is mutual.”—braiding sweetgrass
i invite you to mediate on any or all of that & wish you a most blessed & transformative buddha purnima!
