it’s wednesday, april 5 (happy birthday, dad—i miss you ever day!), & moon is in virgo, in the starspace called hasta, where moon will be full as full tonight. in case you need a quickie astronomy tutorial: the reason the moon is full in virgo is that the sun is directly opposite it, in pisces, blasting it like all get-out with its rays, & the moon is reflecting the brilliance of those rays, is, as the red hot chili peppers sing in “road trippin’,” a mirror for the sun. full moons are about harmonizing, making peace between, oppositions—between the masculine (sun) & feminine (moon) & between the energies of the signs involved.

pisces is where we can lose ourselves in an experience of the ineffable, virgo where we keep our feet firmly planted on the ground, lest we, um, lose total control of ourselves. pisces is dreamland, virgo cold, hard reality. we need both: our dream can’t become reality without the practical skills of virgo to map it & organize it & schedule time to work on it. virgo’s routines & habits allow us to bring the ineffable into our daily lives through meditation & asana & chanting, for example, or by sitting at our desk so the magic has somewhere to land.

hasta means “hand” & is usually represented by an open hand, a hand of offering not grasping, of healing & manifestation. savitur rules this asterism & gives us the power to fulfill our creative potential as long as we remember that it comes from god, that we are but the vehicles.

so, putting it all together, our moon work for the waning lunar cycle is to ask ourselves where in our life we don’t have enough structure to let the magic flow through us, where we might need some healing, & set an intention to correct that imbalance. we are invited to bring the liminal to light, the metaphysical into the physical, to make the unreal real.

& as long as music is already in the mix, for inspiration we can chant or listen to the gayatri mantra to invoke savitur, remind us that the light is within (i love deva premal’s sublime version). & b/c it’s hanuman’s birthday (jai hanuman!), we can tap into his divine courage to get ‘er done vis à vis the hanuman chalisa (which, b/c hanuman is my special dude, i chant every day, or as much of it as i know by heart, which, truth be told, isn’t much, but it is said that even one word of the chalisa has the shakti of the whole prayer!). we can’t do better than one of krishna das’s soothing baritone versions, like this one.

oh, & it’s wednesday, ruled by mercury, who gives us discriminating intelligence & the ability to communicate, but who is also conjunct rahu, whose superpower is confusion & exaggeration, which means we might not be thinking too clearly today, may be overthinking. so maybe it’s a good day to give our heads a rest & just chant!

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
