it’s wednesday, august 12, & moon is in taurus, in the starspace called krittika. taurus is moon’s happy place, where our emotional body feels grounded, where its fluctuations aren’t so erratic, so extreme, where we’re not swinging from high to low, manic to depressed. how does it feel to be on an even keel for a change?! it is said that we need to experience what’s bad, what’s painful, in order to know what joy & happiness feel like. note that taurus is opposite scorpio & that scorpio’s waters are dark & stormy, so the experience of taurus is the opposite of all that drama. which might not feel as exciting, might just feel sweet & cozy. but who needs excitement, i.e., drama, all the time?!
krittika invites us to excise (to cut out, or krit) what is extraneous, what is noise/distraction; it invites us to thin out the traffic in our life & mind. in yoga sutra I.41, patanjali tells us that when the mind is free from its vrittis (its stories, its fluctuations, its false beliefs), when they are thinned out (ksina‘d), it becomes like a shining jewel (abhijatasya maneh). not to mix metaphors here, but when the mind becomes pure, it becomes like a sponge, able to absorb whatever is before it. in his commentary on this sutra, edwin bryant writes:
“just as a pure crystal shines with a red color when placed next to a red hibiscus flower, so the calm, pure, & luminous sattvic mind, when freed from the effects of rajas & tamas, shines with the form of any object presented to it.”
& thus we can be in a state of wonder. today is a good day to thin the traffic of our minds so we can cultivate a state of wonder.
it’s the ninth phase of the waning moon, so beware of toxic emotions, which are, yes, another kind of traffic, of noise, of distraction from our pure essence.
wednesday is owned by mercury, so use your words wisely—say what you mean & mean what you say—but do use them.
& that’s your daily bliss! which is a kind of lunar weather report. the moon is our consciousness & i hope that by unpacking the cosmic forces influencing it every day, you’ll be better able to understand & thus lean into its ever-changing vibrations & use them to your advantage.
