it’s thursday, august 12, & moon is in virgo, in the starspace called hasta. in the environment of earthy, tamasic virgo, we hew toward taking practical measures to keep ourselves safe (tamas guna is all about fear), to prevent or remove difficulties from our life.
we all have different ideas about what that means, but one thing is pretty clear: fear (being in a constant state of fight or flight) just makes things worse. fear, compounded by social isolation, can suppress our immune response, which is the exact opposite of what we need now. so what can we do, besides educate ourselves, stay informed, not take any facts for granted no matter what source they come from? (did you know that barely 30% of americans have faith in the media & that we rank lowest in the world on that front?!) according to the population reference bureau, all we have to do is turn our focus outward & help others. so simple! so, go ahead & do a good deed today! & tomorrow & the next day! & see if you don’t feel the weight of your fight-or-flight response lifting.
hasta is ruled by savitur, the god of sunrise, who, according to the rig veda, “puts vision in our eyes, into our bodies, into our world.” it’s a good day to chant the gayatri mantra:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
om bhuur-bhuvah svah
tat-savitur-varennyam
bhargo devasya dhiimahi
dhiyo yo nah pracodayaat ||
“we meditate on the divine light of the radiant source, the creator, whose effulgence illumines all realms (physical, mental and spiritual). may this divine light illumine our intellect.”
it’s the fifth lunar day, the fifth phase of the waxing moon, which supports healing. given what i said above about virgo, it seems that helping another or others today would be a win-win: it would be healing for us & them.
thursday is ruled by jupiter, who brings wisdom, connects us to truth, through teachers & teachings. the guru-shishya (teacher-student) relationship relies on trust, but that trust has to be earned. it is incumbent upon the student to remain healthfully skeptical, to question their teacher & teachings, to not be intimidated by the power dynamic, by their authority.
