ardra means “fresh,” “moist,” “green,” “soft.” the mind is fertile here, producing new growth in the form of soft, green ideas about who we are. the presiding deity is rudra, an aspect of shiva, whose job is to destroy our ignorance, to guide us toward the answers about our existence. no previous experience required!
but knowledge without discrimination can be destructive. ardra was also the name of the demon taraka, who practiced great austerities in order to be given the boon of practically limitless power from brahma & then used that power to abuse the other gods. yes, even the celestial realm is not immune from the corruption of power—even the celestial realm is rife with ignorance.
the third book of patanjali’s yoga sutra describes the supernatural powers (being able to make yourself as big as a mountain or as tiny as a flea, for example) that are attained through the practices of yoga. some people keep their eyes laser-focused on the ends, on achieving what are called siddhis, rather than just on doing their practices, on the practice of the practices. patanjali warns devotees that unity with spirit is the goal, not possessing super powers. as anyone who has ever been barked at by an angry yogi can tell you, just b/c they can put both feet behind their head & balance on one hand does not an awesome human being make them, does not a human aligned with the the power of true wisdom make them.
it’s the eleventh phase of the waning moon, so this is a great good day to get with your practices & not worry about the results, to abide in the practice of practice & surrender to the knowledge that that’s where your true power lies.
