it’s thursday, august 4, & moon is in libra, in the starspace called swati. after a spell in earthy, tamasic, feminine virgo, we find ourselves under the sway of airy, rajasic, masculine libra. we are done, for now, with reflecting on & solidifying the foundations of our lives & are ready to share (air) with others (rajasic), to get out & about (masculine). i love this ever-shifting energy of the zodiac, how it doesn’t allow us to stay stuck, keeps us moving, gives us a change of pace, how just when, in this case, we’re tired of being homebodies, of dealing with the boring details of life (unless, of course, you’re a virgo!), we are encouraged to socialize, be with our people & in-joy.
swati, which is ruled by vayu, the god of wind & hanuman’s dad, is the epitome of the air element. the five vayus are the various expressions of our inner airs, our prana, our precious life force, the ways it moves through & enlivens us. for example, apana vayu is seated in the pelvis & moves downward, grounding us; prana vayu is seated in the heart & moves upward, nourishing the brain so we can think & be inspired. this asterism brings the lesson that just as hanuman couldn’t have made the great leap over the ocean to sri lanka without harnessing all his prana to his cause, so we can accomplish great things if we, too, can coordinate & harmonize our prana. we can think more clearly when we’re grounded, for starters. which means: it’s a great good day to get our pranayama on!
it’s the seventh lunar day, the seventh phase of the waxing moon, which reminds us to remain humble even when we are accomplishing great deeds. which means, let’s not let all of our prana go to our heads!
thursday is ruled by jupiter, who gives us our beliefs. but guess what? beliefs are not the same as facts. beliefs come from a knowing that can’t necessarily be proved, like, for example, that god exists—or doesn’t. but they can also come from evidenced-based untruths, like, for example, believing that the earth is flat when any photo from space proves the opposite. with jupiter retrograde now, we are encouraged to reflect on what we believe & why.
