it’s tuesday, december 12, & we have a new moon in scorpio, in the starspace called jyeshtha. scorpio is where moon is debilitated, meaning that it is the most unstable, its watery element meeting the watery element of scorpio being just too much water, too much emotion, so we can feel overwhelmed by all that we are feeling, especially those feelings arising out of our darkest thoughts, the stories we concoct from them. scorpio is where our shadow comes out to play.

jyeshtha gives us the power to rise above & overcome obstacles, slay our inner demons. that’s exactly what indra, who rules this asterism, famously did—by surrendering & with not just a little help from his friends. when all else failed, he literally went into the belly of the beast, allowed himself to be swallowed by the dragon vritrasura. but he took with him his vajra, the sword made from the bones of the rishi dadhici, who sacrificed himself for its creation, just as indra was willing to sacrifice himself to slay vritrasura. this asterism brings a lesson about humility & taking responsibility, realizing that we are not all that, or all that all by ourselves.

what else is in the mix? tuesday is ruled by mars, who also rules scorpio & is holding down the fort there, which is kinda helpful but kinda not: while the combo of moon + mars can be auspicious, not so much when moon is dark & debilitated. & mars is combust, too close to the sun, who is also in scorpio, so feeling irritable, short-fused. not to mention that rahu is churning the waters in pisces, adding to our sturm und drang. on the plus side, mars is strong in his own sign, as are saturn & venus in theirs (aquarius & libra, respectively).

the bhagavad gita reminds us that it is our desires, our attachment to satisfying all of our sensual cravings (& the stories we concoct around how they are not being is not satisfied!), that causes all of our suffering, all of our dark nights of the soul, & that anger arises from our desires—b/c they can never be fully satisfied, b/c as soon as we finish one piece of chocolate, the craving arises for the next one, isn’t it?

so our new moon work is to take responsibility for our inner demons & conquer them with compassion & humility rather than anger. & don’t forget to carry your vajra!

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
