it’s thursday, december 12, & moon is in the starspace called mrigashira, which occupies a sky-slice split between taurus & gemini, but as i write moon has moved into the gemini portion. having gotten all nice ‘n’ cozy in taurus, we now feel grounded enough, sure-footed enough, to set out on new adventures in gemini—to follow our curiosity where it leads, to pursue our interests, to explore new territory & to do so with a sense of play, maybe just for the fun of it.
mrigashira is the wandering deer & is ruled by soma, the personification of the moon. soma is the elixir of immortality, the nectar of bliss, that the gods drink of abundantly but which mere mortals pursue, like wandering deer, alas, mostly in vain. ramana maharshi says, “what you are looking for is what is looking.” in “the wizard of oz,” dorothy eventually realizes, “if i ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. because if it isn’t there, i never really lost it to begin with.” we can be as restless as deer, as clueless as dorothy, unable to sit still long enough to realize that what we are looking for is within us, always pursuing one more morsel b/c we think maybe this is it, maybe this will satisfy our craving, our curiosity; maybe this tender morsel will be the bliss-bringer.
“happiness is a butterfly which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp—but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” — nathaniel hawthorne
it’s the first phase of the waning moon, which fosters creativity & new beginnings, which often arise through grace not effort, through play not work, alight like butterflies if we’re patient enough, can get still enough, inside & out.
thursday is owned by jupiter, who is gazing expansively at the moon right now, infusing our consciousness with hope & higher purpose.
