it’s tuesday, january 6, & moon is in leo, in the starspace called maghā. cancer’s love is maternal, feminine & emotional; leo’s paternal, masculine & protective. cancer is ruled by all-feeling moon, leo by all-shining sun. cancer receives, leo acts. while the moon waxes & wanes, the sun consistently lights up & heats up the world. leo invites us to shine as consistently & brightly as the sun, who does so not for his own sake but for ours—he sends his heat & light generously out out out … to us.

maghā is ruled by the pitris, our ancestors, especially our parents. the fourth noble truth of buddhism* is the eightfold path to end suffering, one-eighth of which is called “right view/thought,” seeing reality clearly, having correct thoughts about it—i.e., the roots of our suffering. from there we can see our parents & their suffering more clearly, which allows us to see them with compassion rather than blame. we can see that they did the best they could given their circumstances & recognize the debt we owe them for all they did for us. it’s a good day to honor our parents, show our gratitude to them.

it’s the fourth lunar day (tithi), the fourth phase of the waning moon, which is related to lord ganesh, placer & remover of obstacles (whaaat?). this tithi, in combo with maghā & tuesday creates an amrita yoga, a combo that yields nectar, which might allow us to see that we are the creators of our own obstacles? or that they’re there to help us grow? might inspire more discipline?

tuesday is ruled by mars, who gives us courage & discipline, the discipline to take right action (another eighth of the eightfold path). in a recent medium post, dr. viktoria verde noted that “if discipline feels like punishment, you’re doing it wrong,” that “discipline is the highest form of self-love & respect.”

discipline creates structure so we can get done what we mean to, be all we’re meant to be, act righteously. discipline sets us free! but/& discipline can’t be imposed; it has to be organic—& flexible in the face of what life throws at us.

how does discipline show up in your life? does it feel like freedom or imprisonment?

*the first noble truth is that life entails suffering, the second that our cravings are what cause our suffering, the third that there is a way out of our suffering; the fourth shows us the way. for a mini dive into the four noble truths, check out this half-hour podcast with ram dass.

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
