it’s friday, november 7, & moon is in taurus, in the starspace called rohiṇī until noon mountain time, then mṛgaśira. taurus is where we get our happy on. the ultimate goal, the highest form of happiness, is to be happy for no reason, not needing anything external (another person, for example), which can be a stretch for most of us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get there. we can start with sensual pleasures, the gateway drug, if you will, to eternal happiness.
in buddhism, there are four kinds of happiness/pleasure:
• sense pleasure: lying in the sun, eating chocolate, the touch of our lover.
• positive states of mind: love, compassion, kindness, generosity—just thinking/feeling in a positive way.
• bliss, aka “calm abiding”: which arises through meditation & is said to be better than sex! lmk!
• wisdom: understanding the true nature of reality, of the world.
“there’s nothing wrong with experiencing pleasure. nothing wrong with happiness, nothing wrong with pleasant experiences. but the problem is if we have strong attachment & clinging to pleasure, what happens when we do that is we never get satisfied.”—venerable sangye hhadro
try IN-joying without clinging, without expecting it to last forever (more below)!
rohiṇī, speaking of desire, is ruled by prajapati, the creator of all that is, who created his daughter rohiṇī & then fell in love with her, causing quite a ruckus in the heavens & reminding us to keep the intention around what we want, about what we create pure lest we incite unwholesome responses in our world. mṛgaśira is ruled by soma (elixir of immortality) & is the star of wanderlust, of constantly searching for what will quench desire once & for all, bring us into a state of eternal bliss. a musk deer is led by its nose, seeking the intoxicating scent of musk without realizing the scent is coming from itself! the lesson of this asterism is that what we are searching for is not “out there” but “in here.”
it’s the third lunar day (tithi), the third phase of the waning moon, which has the quality of pusha, “nourishment,” so it’s the best tithi to take care of home & family, to nourish our relationships.
friday is ruled by venus, who also rules taurus, so it’s a double-good day to double your pleasure, double your fun, to do what you love with the ones you love … without clinging, without attaching, without expecting those sensual pleasures to last forever. one way to heighten your pleasure, take it to the next level, is to expand it outward, imagine everyone in the world enjoying whatever you’re enjoying—food, sex, dancing, being in nature. try it & see if it doesn’t triple your pleasure, triple your fun!
& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
