it’s tuesday, july 16, the moon is full in sagittarius, in the starspace called uttara ashadha, & there will be a partial lunar eclipse this afternoon. not only that, but the sun is moving house, or, um, sign today, into cancer. full moons are always a good time to minimize activity, get quiet & meditate. & so are eclipses. & b/c the sun represents our own soul(ar) power, when he moves into a new sign, it’s like our own battery isn’t fully charged, so it’s also wise to lower our expectations in terms of what we might accomplish, take the day off if possible. so three reasons to stay home & meditate. need a fourth? well, it is said that meditating during an eclipse is 1,000 times more potent than meditating on a regular day!
&&&&&&&& it’s guru purnima, the full moon associated with the guru, b/c, according to yogic lore, this is the day shiva was recognized as the first guru. & shiva def gets olympic gold as a meditator! if you don’t know what to meditate on, meditate on your teachers. guru can be broken down into “gu,” which means darkness (literally, gooo, gunk), & “ru,” which means dispeller of. who has dispelled the darkness for you, revealed, or tried to reveal, the truth of your existence? if you don’t have a guru-guru or other spiritual teacher(s), you might think of your first teacher, who was your mother, or schoolteachers, or mentors. today is a powerful day to show gratitude to those who have shown you the way, lit a candle in the darkness, blazed a path for you. it’s a good day to do puja for your teachers, read spiritual works, donate money to a spiritual center or knowledge base (or, hey, even your fave spiritual podcast).
b/c the full moon is in sagittarius, it underscores the connection to teachers & teachings, asks us to make sure we are aligned with pure teachers & teachings, to make sure we’re not believing blindly, that we’re not bypassing.
fun eclipse fact: eclipses magnify energy. someone born on an eclipse can use that power positively or negatively. for example, someone born on a solar eclipse could become a spiritual leader or be reckless with their power. someone born on a lunar eclipse could be sweet & pious, a bhakta, or aloof, withdrawn, totally out of touch with reality. it is said the that prophet mohammed was born on a solar eclipse. guess which fake orange excuse for a president with the emotional & intellectual capacities of a toddler (nothing against toddlers!) was born on a lunar eclipse? just saying!
