it is friday, july 3, & moon is in scorpio this morning, in the starspace called jyeshtha (plz see yesterday’s post), then moves into mula, in sagittarius. b/c moon is going to be full & eclipsed tomorrow & b/c it will be the full moon associated with the guru & b/c i don’t post on saturdays, i am going to take this opportunity to talk about tomorrow, aka guru purnima, which also happens to be my teacher sharon gannon’s birthday!

guru purnima is an auspicious day on which to honor the guru. the guru is the one who shows us the light by removing (ru) the darkness, the gunk (gu). that may be a sat guru, that person you have an ongoing relationship with, it could be a succession of gurus, & it could also be the guru principle, the idea that the universe is conspiring to wake us up, that the light is always trying to reach us—it’s just a matter of being receptive, of being aware of all the opportunities that present themselves. it’s a time to remember all the good gurus have done for us, to look back & see how far we’ve come thanks to the wisdom they’ve bestowed on us.

the more we honor the guru, the stronger our guru muscle becomes, the more receptive we are to the teachings, & the stronger our inner guru becomes—ultimately we are our own gurus … it just often takes us a while to realize it; that’s why we need gurus.

sharon set me on a path of compassion by introducing me to the concept of ahimsa (non-harming), by underscoring the interconnectivity of all beings, that my thoughts, words & actions reverberate beyond me. i thank her every day for inspiring me to become vegan, which is a constant reminder of how my choices, in this case about food, impact the world around me. do i want to destroy the environment so i can eat meat? no. do i want animals to suffer? no. do i want the workers in slaughterhouses to be abused & now, thanks to covid, even killed so i can have a hamburger? no. with each bite of food i appreciate  that i am contributing to less violence & destruction,

but sharon & i also share a love of literature & reading. she reads prodigiously, famously three times a day: nonfiction in the morning, scripture midday, then fiction in the evening before bed. one of the books she turned me on to was ka: dar oakley in the ruin of ymr, a fantastical & philosophical novel about a 2,000-year-old crow whose wisdom could benefit humans. oh, how we could use dar’s wisdom now!

so crows have become a secret (well, not so secret now) meme between us & when, as i was walking into a gallery in ojai, california, in february, i looked down & saw these crows (pic) engraved in the path, i immediately thought of her. this is my birthday offering to her.

happy guru purnima, everyone. may the day be filled with auspicious teachings & may you be receptive to them so that you can put them into practice—b/c there is no time like the present!

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a kind of lunar weather report. the moon is our consciousness & i hope that by unpacking the cosmic forces influencing it every day, you’ll be better able to understand & thus lean into its ever-changing vibrations & use them to your advantage.
