it’s wednesday, july 6, & moon is in virgo, in the starspace called hasta. in the environment of virgo, perfectionism comes to the fore—we won’t rest until every aspect of our life, including ourself, is shipshape. we get to remember that perfect is an illusion, an unattainable goal. it’s ok to hew toward that goal, but not to attach to it so hard that we forget to actually live & enjoy. we get to remember, as my teacher sharon gannon famously says, to “do your best & let god do the rest.”
hasta means “hand” & is defined by five stars, together representing the fingertips of an open hand, although some jyotishis equate hasta with the fingers closed into a fist. maybe that’s b/c as ignorant humans (i mean ignorant of the truth of our existence, the ignorance known as avidya, which we all suffer from) we think we are the doers & become attached to our doing: we want to hang on to, grasp, whatever we can, whatever we have created—whether it be the thoughts we are thinking or emotions we are feeling or the material objects we have surrounded ourselves with or our spiritual practices. let’s face it, do we not say “my feelings,” “my asana practice,” “my ideas,” “my partner,” etc., as if we own them?
this asterism brings a lesson about disabusing ourselves of the notion that we can achieve anything without blessings from the divine. or, as uhtred of bebbanburg says to alfred in the second episode of “the last kingdom,” maybe luck is having god in your heart (my paraphrase).
it’s the seventh lunar day, the seventh phase of the waxing moon, which brings caution about our ego nature, about, yes, getting all up in our heads by thinking we are the doers, are all powerful, about forgetting who really holds the strings, makes sh*t happen. today is a great, good day for humility.
wednesday is infused with the energy of mercury, planet of discriminating intelligence, our discriminating intelligence, which gives us the ability & desire to sift fact from fiction, truth from untruth, partiality from impartiality.
“enrich yourself with every possible truth & renounce untruth & prejudice as soon as possible.”—shri brahmananda sarasvati
& that’s your daily bliss! which is a kind of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss. may it inspire you to enlighten up a little more each day.
