daily blissit’s thursday, june 20, & moon is in the starspace of capricorn called shravana. capricorn’s planetary ruler, saturn, invites us to make peace with our tangible fears, look them in the face & make a plan to eradicate them, get quiet so we recognize them, & recognize that they are not us.

shravana comes from the sanskrit verb that means to listen. in order to listen, we have to open our ears so we can hear. but there are external ears & internal ears, & ultimately we want to use our internal ears, which means getting very quiet, getting still, so that all the external noise is tuned out & we can truly tune in, drop in. from silence the truth arises, is revealed, eventually but inevitably.

“what’s that i hear now ringing in my ear / i’ve heard that sound before / what’s that i hear now ringing in my ear / i hear it more & more / it’s the sound of freedom calling / ringing up to the sky / it’s the sound of the old ways falling / you can hear it if you try / you can hear it if you try … ” (phil ochs)

we used to sing this song every morning as we gathered around the flagpole at my summer camp in the san bernardino mountains. the sound of a hundred children’s voices pierced the silence of the pine forest & resonated in the silence of our hearts. i was too young to realize it was a protest song, it always felt spiritual to me, always seemed connected to the ether, which i would later realize was consciousness, was the embrace of the divine.

what is the ultimate freedom but moksha, liberation from the suffering of separateness? if we can cultivate silence, we can create the environment in which we can hear the call of freedom, & then listen to its message of truth, so that the suffering, the old ways, can fall by the wayside.
