it’s monday, august 18, & moon is in gemini, in the starspace called mṛgaśira. gemini is ruled by youthful & curious mercury & is, in vedic tradition, represented by a binary couple, a man & a woman. mercury is considered neuter/neutral, is a chameleon, bisexual, as he can swing either way, depending on whom he is hanging out with or being aspected by. he was, according to puranic myth, born from an affair between jupiter’s wife, tara, & soma (the moon incarnated as a man). so sexual mischief, curiosity, irresistible desire—gemini is associated with kama (as opposed to dharma, artha or moksha).

jupiter & tara were eventually reconciled & jupiter even accepted & raised mercury as his own child, partly b/c mercury is so darn clever & disarming, but also thanks to a lot of rumbling from the other gods. still, the relationship between jupiter & mercury remained, & remains, uneasy.

gemini is a dual sign (like virgo, sagittarius & pisces), can see myriad possibilities, choices, as did tara, & have trouble choosing among them.

“our lives are fashioned by our choices. first we make our choices. then our choices make us.”—anne frank

with jupiter hanging out in gemini these days, we may feel like we have an abundance of choices & it may be more challenging to tap into another of mercury’s qualities to choose among them: discriminating intelligence.

mṛgaśira is the star of searching/wandering & has the power to bring fulfillment, in the form of joy, ananda, bliss, which is, consciously or un-, what we are all always searching for—the sense of wholeness, which is also what the binary couple represents, the union, complete integration, of male & female energies.

“soma is a great enjoyment that is won, conquered, bought or stolen, so its procurement does not always come easily. however, what does not require effort to gain is not always enjoyed either.”—david frawley

it’s the eleventh lunar day (tithi), the eleventh phase of the waning moon, which is said to be the best tithi for spiritual practices like meditation, b/c our mind is the least bizzy & buzzy. it is through doing our spiritual practices, through tapas (self-effort), not by searching endlessly “out there,” in, for example, experiences/people, that we ultimately find bliss—or, um, bliss finds us.

monday is ruled by moon, planet of kindness & gentleness—toward ourselves & others. it’s a good day to banish shouldas, wouldas, couldas, embrace more self-acceptance & more acceptance of others.

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
