it’s wednesday, april 1, & we have a full moon in virgo, in the starspace called hastā tonight, which means sun is opposite, in pisces, & sun happens to be joined by saturn.

virgo is ruled by detail-oriented mercury & it’s the sixth house of the natural zodiac (the one that begins with aries & ends with pisces), where our concerns turn to the material aspects of our life, to our physical well-being. virgo invites us to focus on whether our routines (exercise, eating, meditation, house maintenance, etc.) are helping or hindering our well-being.

pisces, the twelfth sign/house of the natural zodiac, is where our concerns turn to the metaphysical aspects of our life, to our spiritual dimension, our relationship with god, all that is. pisces is ruled by wise & expansive jupiter, whose sanskrit name is guru. a guru is the one who removes our illusions, allows us to see the big picture, that all is god, that there is no difference between the material & the spiritual, that the universe has our back, a plan for us.

with the luminaries dwelling at opposite ends of this axis, we may be feeling like we’re dancing back & forth between one & the other, but/& our challenge is to integrate both, to see the validity, the necessity of the material & the spiritual, which was a challenge also faced by the seventeenth-century maharashtri poet-saint tukaram (pictured):

i could not lie anymore so I started to call my dog ‘god.’
first he looked
confused,

then he started smiling, then he even
danced.

i kept at it: now he doesn’t even
bite.

i am wondering if this
might work on
people?

hastā means “hand” & is ruled by savitur, a solar deity whose rays reach outward like the fingers of an open hand. this nakshatra brings a lesson about the power of our hands to manifest & to heal, & also reminds us that we are not the doers but the vehicles for the light to flow through us, to do god’s work.

moon has been traveling by herself for the past fortnight, with just a short hang with jupiter in gemini, so we may be feeling especially lonely these days, & that feeling is going to continue for the next fortnight or so. good to know you’re not really alone, that we’re all in this together, right?

we have also been experiencing kala sarpa yoga, which happens when all the planets dwell in the signs between the nodes, which are currently in aquarius (rahu, the north node) & leo (ketu, the south node). this configuration can bring intensity as our shadow may come out to play, we may get more easily triggered, reactive. of course triggers are opportunities for reflection & transformation.

the good news is that moon is free from the snake of time, the nodal constraints, until april 14. the maybe not-so-good news is that kala sarpa yoga will return every month through july. so best to get used to it & use it to your advantage—don’t waste opportunities for transformation!

speaking of shadow: saturn was the son of sun’s shadow wife, chaya, & it took a while for sun to own him as his own, which created friction between them. with sun conjunct saturn (not exactly a friendly combo!) we may be wrestling with questions of identity, of who we are & what we’re doing here.

pisces invites surrender, virgo control; pisces trust, virgo safety. the truth is that there is very little we can control, so why do we make such a big deal about it? why are we so attached to being the doers? the best we can do is to do our best & let god do the rest, as my teacher sharon gannon says. she also says, let go & let god.

what does your dance between attachment & surrender look like? how can you trust that all is unfolding with a divine purpose? can you take solace from the fact that even great saints struggled with harmonizing the spiritual & the material aspects of their lives, of being spiritual beings within a physical container? what would it be like to see god everywhere—in animals, in nature, in your best friend, in a carrot, cloud & cat?

wishing you a most blessed & transformative full moon!

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
