it’s friday, march 8, & moon moves from capricorn into aquarius this morning while being supported & transported by the starspace called dhanishtha. while capricorn wants us to get serious about our personal lives, aquarius, also ruled by stern & serious saturn, wants us to get serious about our shared lives, for it calls in our humanitarian spirit, our ability & desire for selfless service, to make a positive impact on a local, national or global level.
dhanishtha means “wealthiest” & is symbolized by a drum, like shiva’s damaru. drums are hollow, which invites receptivity & also allows music to be made & conveyed. coming after shravana, the asterism of deep listening, dhanishtha gives us the ability to create something when we’ve connected to our soul’s wisdom—not to mention that wealth comes when we dance to our own drummer, are true to ourselves.
the thirteenth lunar day (tithi), becomes the fourteenth this morning, which means tomorrow is the fifteenth & that we have a new moon at the end of that tithi, in the wee wee wee hours sunday morn, in the starspace called purvabhadra. the fourteenth tithi is always sacred to shiva, but this particular one is maha shivaratri, shiva’s most sacred day. shiva is the lord of transformation, & we need fuel for the fire of transformation, fuel in the form of our inner demons, our darkness, our shadow—i.e., our limiting beliefs & negative tendencies, which are results of the ego running amok. lucky for us, there is always plenty of fuel for that fire! lucky for us the ego always creates mischief!
as we draw closer to this new moon, more & more demons may rise to the surface of our consciousness. the good news is that purvabhadra is ruled by an aspect of shiva that represents kundalini energy, so as we purify our egoic tendencies, higher consciousness can rise. how do we purify? shiva wears the moon in his hair. moon’s superpower is peacefulness, gives us the ability to calm our mind, which is where our demons live, & shiva was the ur meditator. so we can meditate & chant mantra, alone or in satsang—kirtan anyone?
