it’s monday, may 11, & moon is in the starspace called purvaashadha, which occupies a sky-slice of sagittarius. under the sway of sagittarius we begin to wonder what the meaning of our life is, what we’re supposed to be doing here. & so we look to others, like teachers, for explanations so that we can create a belief system that provides a container for, that shapes, our existence. belief system does not necessarily equal high-minded philosophy—suicide bombers believe in something; alex jones projects wacky conspiracy theories that give his life & the life of others purpose. we’re all believers.

purvaashadha means “that which cannot be subdued” & refers to latent talents & abilities, to hidden knowledge & wisdom—hidden from ourselves & thus from the world. when moon was in swati, i mentioned how clueless hanuman was of his prowess. the same was true of rama, to whom hanuman was devoted. the ramayana tells us that “the devas knew who rama was”—i.e., a god—”but he himself was not aware of his own divinity save on rare occasions.” the devas see our gifts, which come to us through the divine, but how many of us see them ourselves, except on rare occasions? how many of us shrink from embracing them fully? in this asterism we still feel some of the blockages, but when the moon moves into its partner in change, uttaraashadha, tomorrow, we should feel some movement … if we are open to receiving, to allowing. if we can accept our own divinity. what would the world have been like if hanuman didn’t embrace his divinity? if rama didn’t embrace his? what will the world be deprived of if we don’t embrace ours?

it’s the fifth tithi (lunar day), which is related to healing routines. what practices do you find most healing—asana, meditation, a walk in nature, drawing, writing, gardening? if you’ve been feeling a little off maybe you’ve been neglecting a practice essential to your well-being. it could also mean that you need some medicine, like acupuncture, & it seems that getting some will be possible very shortly. (we’ll see if my thursday appointment stands.)

monday is ruled by the moon, which means we may feel especially sensitive or connected emotionally to others today, which is not necessarily a bad thing. it just means that we may want to be more gentle with ourselves—gentleness can be a healing practice, as can self-forgiveness.
