it’s tuesday, may 12, & moon is in the starspace called uttaraashadha, which straddles sagittarius & capricorn, transforming our sagittarian hopes & inspiration into something solid through capricornian discipline & pressure of time—if not now, when? moon moved into the capricorn sky-slice last night, so we should be feeling the sternness & seriousness of capricorn today. capricorn’s ruler, saturn, is definitely a party-pooper & will hold us to curfew, but that’s just because he’s playing the long game while we’re often playing the short one—preoccupied with immediate gratification rather than with fulfilling our highest purpose, maximizing the gift of our embodied existence.

as i mentioned yesterday, uttaraashadha is the partner in change to purvaashadha. like purvaashadha, uttarashadha means “that which cannot be subdued,” but there is a difference, because unsubduable is ashadha: purva means “earlier,” uttara “latter.” so, not to get too in the sanskrit weeds, but just so you don’t think i’m mistakenly saying the same thing twice: the difference between the two energies is that with purva a, the latent talents & abilities, the hidden knowledge & wisdom that wants to bust out is still feeling restrained, is still being shy, having doubts. but uttara a will not let us deny ourselves & thus the world any longer. “some people dream of great accomplishments, while others stay awake & do them,” goes the unattributed saying. what we dream in purva a, we make happen in uttara a—it really becomes totally unsubdued. but i do recommend not sacrificing a good night’s sleep.

it’s the sixth tithi (phase of the moon), which is related to kartikeya, shiva’s youngest son. he was philosopher-warrior celebrated for vanquishing his enemies. & i don’t need to tell you that the only enemies that matter are the ones in our heads, the ones our thoughts conjure to mess with us, to keep our gifts subdued. today is a good day to conquer some of our mental demons & then do a happy dance afterward.

tuesday is ruled by mars, who gives us the courage to—well, how serendipitous!—vanquish our enemies. we just have to remember to be discriminating about using that energy—not every insult is worth whipping out our swords or spewing angry words over.
