the daily bliss

it’s friday, may 1, & moon is in the starspace called aslesha this morning & moves into magha this afternoon. aslesha is the last sky-slice of cancer & where it ends, so does cancer. there are three places in the zodiac where an asterism doesn’t create a bridge or segue between two signs: the juncture between cancer & leo, between scorpio & sagittarius, between pisces & aries. this point is called a gandanta. it’s a gap or pause in which there is no support for the planet crossing over. so mind the gap! if your mind seems a little aimless or confused in early afternoon, know that this will soon pass as moon settles into magha in fiery leo after its sojourn in watery cancer.

aslesha is ruled by the nagas, serpents with occult powers (see yesterday’s post for more on aslesha). magha is ruled by the pitris, our ancestors, those who have come before us & blazed trail for us. the energy of this asterism invites us to remember them by keeping their essence alive, which is also a great way to heal from any regrets we may be harboring—all those woulda-shoulda-couldas.

for example, in a dharma talk earlier this week, my teacher ruth mentioned that she’d meant to email her teacher joan, who was very old, but didn’t manage to do so before joan passed. joan had shared the wisdom of the masters with ruth & many others who had had the good fortune to study with her at ananda ashram in upstate new york. so what did ruth do? she read to us from kabir, the 15th-century mystic indian poet, whom ruth was introduced to by joan: “life is the sort of guest you might not meet twice.” in that way, she honored her teacher by keeping the teachings alive & forgave herself for the unsent email.

it’s the ninth phase of the waxing moon, which is related to serpent energy (ohhh, those mischievous nagas again!). if poisonous thoughts/emotions arise, see if you can transform them into an elixir, like making lemonade out of lemons. which is something most of us are getting great good practice with during the pandemic, eh? how to make the best of a not-so-great situation?

friday is owned by venus. venus is our capacity to enjoy life, to experience our existence through all of our senses, & to share that experience with others. what lights up your senses? friday is a good day to turn that switch on. venus wants us to taste the nectar.
