it’s thursday, november 21, & moon is in the starspace called uttara phalguni, which starts in leo & ends in virgo, bringing the high & mighty leo energy, that sense of having achieved certain material comforts by divine right, down to earth. leo wears a 👑& rules his/her/their realm, but just as a car won’t run if you don’t put gas (or electricity) in it & do routine maintenance, realms don’t function without attention & maintenance either. thank goodness virgo loves all the practical nitty-gritty details that aren’t blingy or sexy, like prancing around in flowing robes with a diamond-encrusted crown, but that keep our realms running smoothly. it’s time to balance the checkbook & repair the roof & get some acupuncture or see an ayurvedic practitioner—to tend to the upkeep of our inner & outer worlds.
uttara phalguni is ruled by aryaman, who offers insight into how to thread the needle of being spiritual beings in human bodies. aryaman confers blessings on contracts, especially the contract of marriage, invites us to make sure that what we sign on for will not only be pleasurable but spiritually uplifting, that our commitments are in alignment with our soul’s purpose, our dharma. we are being encouraged to use our material existence as the pathway to our spiritual evolution, as the means, to fully embrace our embodied experience while being aware of the bigger picture of who we are. uttara phalguni does not want us to live in a cave, but in the world. which can be a huge challenge. i’m reminded that my teacher david life once said that it’s easy to meditate in a cave or on a mountaintop but that you really step up your meditation game when you have to meditate in, say, new york city with the subway maybe rumbling underneath you, horns honking outside your window, the neighbor’s tv booming through your walls. uttara phalguni gives us courage to walk our path in the face of daily adversities.
it’s the tenth phase of the waning moon, which is, like today’s asterism, related to dharma, being in right relationship with our soul’s purpose. doing our dharma isn’t always easy & it doesn’t always feel good in the moment, but it always feels right & feels good in the long term. notice whether your actions today feel right or not.
thursday is owned by jupiter, the guru, so do call on your teachers or their teachings for guidance, do pay attention to the lessons that daily life offers up daily, the opportunities for grace.
