it’s thursday, november 4, & moon is new in libra, in the starspace called swati. & it’s diwali, the hindu festival of lights! libra vibrates with the frequency of symbiosis in relationships—good for you, good for me. & why settle for symbiosis? why not aspire to being upleveled by your relationships? stretched? feeling more authentic?
a good barometer of whether your relationships are beneficial—or better!—is how they make you feel. do you feel more you? more capable, excited, engaged by the people in your life?
the new moon occurs each month when sun & moon come together. this particular new moon occurs when sun is in libra, its sign of debilitation, which means our sense of self is feeling diminished, our own light isn’t shining brightly. diwali celebrates the return of the light after much darkness, the victory of good over evil. it commemorates the return of rama (the sun) & sita (the moon) to their kingdom, ayodhya, after being exiled to the forest & having to undergo ridiculous hardships, including sita being abducted by the demon ravana & having to be rescued by hanuman. the citizens of ayodhya are sooooo excited by their return that they light their way home with lamps, called dipa.
swati is ruled by vayu, the wind god, who was hanuman’s dad. vayu is related to prana, our inner winds, & brings the lesson that in order to get sh*t done, like in hanuman’s case, leap across the ocean between india & lanka to rescue sita, we have to control our prana, our life force, focus it, which is why we practice pranayama (yama = restraint, control). if we don’t, it goes every which way, which is what happens when our doshas become unbalanced & we become too vata: vata, i just learned yesterday from my teacher sam geppi, is deranged prana. who wants to be deranged?!
our moon work for the coming month is to lovingly focus light on our relationships & see what we see, assess whether they make us feel more who we are or not.
thursday is ruled by jupiter, the guru within & without. in a letter to lucia berlin when she was about 10, her father wrote: “i think the greatest teacher is your own heart. if your heart feels light & airy & you feel like singing, you’re being & doing good. if it feels black & soiled & ashamed, you’re doing wrong.”
what is your heart trying to teach you in this & every moment?
& that’s your daily bliss! which is a kind of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss. may it inspire you to enlighten up a little more each day.
