it’s thursday, october 13, & moon is in taurus, in the starspace called rohini. under the sway of taurus, we hew toward feeling comfortable, which we often find, or think we can find, in the external. our culture of entrenched consumer capitalism (hey, i’m not immune—i love me a new pair of yoga pants!) is predicated on making us feel worthless if we don’t keep buying $hit, has instilled the belief in us that our worth comes from what kind of house we live in, what kind of car we drive, what kind of clothes we wear, etc., etc., etc. one definition of yoga is “the state of needing nothing.” our mission, if we accept it, is to know in our hearts that we are complete, totally worthy, that we don’t need anything—to enjoy our stuff without attaching self-worth to it.

rohini is the moon’s favorite place & brings a lesson about our relationship to desire & beauty—our desire to experience it & to bring it into the world, & our desire to share it with others. it’s a good day for indulging creativity, for producing a thing of beauty, & for sharing what delights with our favorite people.

it’s the fourth lunar day, the fourth phase of the waning moon, which is called rikta & is ruled by both yama & ganesh. rikta = “empty, devoid, useless.” yama brings restraint & ganesh brings obstacles. certainly we feel restrained when we are facing obstacles, no? & our obstacles humble us, feeling thwarted can make us feel empty of power, no? this tithi (lunar phase) is considered unfavorable for important activities but good for destroying our enemies, which, ya know, live within us, like thinking obstacles are coming from “out there.” the upside of ganesh is that not only does he put obstacles in our way, he takes them away—he’s a mischievous & benevolent deity, always challenging us to help us grow! sooooo, embrace any obstacles you face today & chant to ganesh to help you overcome them.

thursday is owned by jupiter, who gives us hope.

Hope is the thing with feathers
that perches in the soul,
& sings the tune without the words,
& never stops at all.
—Emily Dickinson
