it’s wednesday, october 6, & moon is new in virgo, in the starspace called hasta, which initiates the nine nights of the divine mother called navaratri. the sanskrit name for virgo, “kanya,” means “virgin” & reminds us of the purity of our essence, which is an internal affair. likewise navaratri is an internal affair as it celebrates the victory of goddess durga over the buffalo demon mahishasura, thus restoring dharma to the world. we all know by now that the only demons we have to vanquish are the ones that live in our minds, right? so for the next nine nights we get to harness our inner durga & rid ourselves of anything sullying the purity of our essence, that prevents our light from shining.
the new moon in hasta sets the stage for our moon work for this lunar cycle. hasta means “hand” & brings the lesson that our destiny is written in our hands, that our work in this lifetime is to fulfill our destiny, to do our dharma. the hand of this asterism is an open one & reminds us that as we offer the gifts of ourselves into the world, as we do our dharma, we do so humbly & generously, b/c we know that we are merely the vehicles, that our gifts come from the divine, that they are ours to share not to hold on to, that the more we give, the more there will be to give, that source is infinite.
with the convergence of navaratri, this is a super potent new moon, asking us to purify our inner temple, to surrender into our truth & trust that the divine, that the universe, that the ineffable has our back. simple but not easy!
wednesday is ruled by mercury, who gives us our powers of communication, supports us in using our words wisely, to know when to use them & which ones to use. communicating well also entails listening, not being so enthrall to our own words that we don’t let anyone else get a word in edgewise. but listening does not mean remaining silent, not speaking up. silence = consent.
