it’s sunday (yes, i’m offering up a bonus bliss for substackers—you’re welcome!), january 18, & we have a new moon in capricorn, in the starspace called uttarāṣaḍha. sun & moon are joined in capricorn by mercury, venus & mars, who are combust, so close to the sun that they are getting scorched—imagine how you’d feel if you fell asleep on the beach midsummer!

sun, mercury, venus & mars have been close traveling companions since they entered sagittarius together last month & will continue their journey together even when they move into aquarius.

this pileup of planets creates a lot of intensity in one sign/one house & we will get no relief until the mid-march eclipse, in aquarius. if you’re not used to it yet, you’d better get used to it now!

capricorn brings lessons about our responsibilities, duties, commitments, about what we take on & how we take it on. sagittarius brought inspiration, which might have come in spades, so we may be feeling overwhelmed with the possibilities, as if we’ve got too many balls in the air & aren’t sure which ball to drop.

uttarāṣaḍha means “final victory,” “victory at last,” takes us to the finish line. this nakshatra is ruled by not one (the usual), not two (the exception in viśakhā), but ten (10!) deities, who represent all the directions & are known collectively as the visvadevas—all (visva) the gods in the cosmos, all the resources we get to call on. in the hindu pantheon the gods are not out there, but in here—they represent aspects/powers/energies/gifts innate to each & every one of us.

our challenge is to know what our gifts are & to own them. also to be willing to delegate tasks to those who are more gifted in that realm than we are. & to not feel as if we suck b/c we can’t do it all all by ourselves.

in the D20 chart of our spiritual progress, sun & moon are dwelling during this new moon in the portion ruled by the goddess cinnamasta, as is saturn, who rules capricorn. cinnamasta famously cut off her own head (her ego) & then, still ecstatically dancing, drank the blood gushing out of it. she didn’t die—her blood was nourishment, revived, revitalized her.

the new moon is a rendezvous between sun & moon, the divine feminine & the divine masculine, & when they get together they create something new, plant a seed for a new beginning, just as when a biologically female & male do.

this new moon invites us to work smarter, not harder. to be responsible about our responsibilities. to take on less, not more. to put on the back burner or throw in the trash what is depleting rather than fortifying/strengthening us. to say no, create boundaries so that we can prioritize what truly matters.

what do you want to take to the finish line, complete?

what resources do you need to make it so?

can you pivot, reschedule, renegotiate without beating yourself up?

saying no the external is a yes to the internal, to our own nourishment. saying no to worldly responsibilities is a yes to self-responsibility.

we get to pause & breathe, stop burning the candle at both ends.

with venus, mars & mercury combust we are being asked, in a nutshell, to purify our relationship to love, power & communicaiton.

& mars is exalted, his most powerful & intelligent self, in capricorn, helping us focus our ambitions.

personally, i always feel like i’m juggling a lot of balls, but it has def been more intense lately. how about you?

what house does capricorn represent for you?

what seed do you want to see grow & blossom during the waxing fortnight of the moon? how are you going to nourish it?

wishing you a most blessed & transformational new moon!

& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
