it’s monday, october 20, & moon is in virgo, in the starspace called hastā until 8:44 a.m MDT, then citrā, which straddles virgo & libra. moon moves overnight into libra, which is where new moon will occur before dawn tomorrow. also in the mix: mars & mercury accompany sun & moon in libra, whose ruling planet, venus, is debilitated (yikes!), + jupiter is exalted (yay!). & it’s diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated when the nights are darkest, reminding us that even the tiniest bit of light, from a candle, from a lamp, the one that is forever lit in our heart, dispels the darkness.
new moon is the union of sun & moon, so moon is dark as dark, & in this case so is sun in a sense b/c he is debilitated in libra, disempowered. rather than seeking the light externally, we are invited to seek it within, in our heart. libra represents our heart chakra.
with libra’s ruler, venus, debilitated as well, & trying to hold space for so much planetary energy (sun, moon, mars & mercury), it may feel as if our heart’s desires are being denied. we may feel dissatisfied with our people, with them not meeting our expectations; we may be playing the blame game, projecting.
diwali celebrates lord rama’s return to ayodhya, his kingdom, after his fourteen-year exile, which culminated in his defeat of the ten-headed demon ravana, the victory of light over darkness, hope over despair. (spoiler alert: each head represents our own inner demons—there’s always one more head, one more demon, to slay!)
how can you turn not getting what you want to your advantage, into a win like rama did? what’s your responsibility, not “theirs”?
do you need to forgive someone, bring more compassion without expectation into your life, heal an issue around trust-grief-rejection, attachments to past relationships or expectations of current ones?
how can you make peace with what was or is, settle arguments so you can move forward?
citrā means “brilliant,” like a jewel, reminding us that a diamond shines only after billions (!) of years of pressure, tapas, doing what’s hard rather than easy.
exalted jupiter gives us hope, guidance, shines from cancer, also associated with our heart.
in the bhagavad gita, krishna teaches that it doesn’t take much to keep the light of the divine lit within: “if one offers me with love & devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, i will accept it.” (9.26)
what little thing can you do each day to stay connected to the light of the divine within you?
may lakshmi, also associated with this new moon, bless you with hope & prosperity!
& that’s your daily bliss! which is a sort of lunar weather report. may it allow you to align with the day’s cosmic energy so you can find & create a little more bliss.
