it’s friday, january 30, moon is in gemini, in the starspace called ārdrā, it’s the thirteenth tithi & venus’ day.
gemini’s sanskrit name, mithuna, can be translated as “couple,” “twins,” “brace” or “pair.” tropical/western astrology hews toward “twins,” vedic/sidereal astrology toward “couple.” as in a man & a woman, which isn’t necessarily genderizing but expresses the union of opposites, & in fact the word maithuna, derived from it, refers to the sex act.
ok, enough etymology, how’s about a story to drill down on the sexuality of this sign?
mercury, who rules gemini, was conceived by his mom, tara, during an affair with soma (the moon in a male form). tara’s hubby, jupiter, was not thrilled by the affair or its outcome, but he eventually (he was wise, after all) accepted the sitch & embraced mercury as his own (& made a note to himself to take breaks from the scriptures to pay more attention to his wife, which is why she wandered).
gemini is airy, so invites communication & sociability, also going where the wind blows. mercury is curious & can be mischievous, but not mean-spirited. thus we can swing any which way, be fickle, may have the good/not-so-good problem of not being able to choose.
sigh.
ārdrā is ruled by rudra, an aspect of shiva, the change agent—something has to end so something else can begin—& change can be unwelcome, especially when we don’t initiate it.
rudra means “the howler.” he is a storm god, wreaks chaos, destruction, confusion, which can make us want to scream & rage, cry our eyes out. doesn’t that emotional purge always feel good afterward?
it’s the thirteenth lunar day (tithi), the thirteenth phase of the waxing moon, which removes all shortcomings & increases all auspiciousness, can accelerate spiritual or material progress. & progress sometimes comes with, um, harsh lessons, lessons that catch us off-guard. these lessons are meant to wake us up, are sent with love. can you welcome them if/when they come?
friday is ruled by relationshipy venus & is considered vedic date night. but/& venus is way close to the sun, whose rays are purifying his energy right now—think being in a 230-degree sauna, as i was yesterday—bringing clarity to our relationship with our relationships, which can also make us frustrated with our people, critical, judgy. sigh. let’s not be that person!
